Are you looking for a position where your work will have an impact on our local food system? The Intervale Food Hub is looking for team members to help us change the world through the power of good food.

The Intervale Food Hub is a small, fast-paced company and a leader in the local food movement. As an enterprise of the non-profit Intervale Center in Burlington, Vermont, we work to support healthy farms, land, and people. We deliver local food subscriptions to people who live, work, and learn in the greater Burlington area, and we also deliver wholesale local food to University of Vermont Dining.

About our Internship Positions

Internships with the Intervale Food Hub incorporate experience in both the operational side of the business and the marketing & outreach side of the business. We also create opportunities to learn more about the other programs of our parent organization, the Intervale Center. 

We will work with you to create an internship that fits your skills, interests, schedule, and hours required.

Typically, we aim for 10-12 hours per week.

Operations Apprentice

  • Time spent in the operational side of the Intervale Food Hub will include learning about fresh local food procurement, packing local food orders, and maintaining our facility’s food safety standards. There are opportunities to learn more about local food procurement and distribution through experience and presentations from our Operations and Buying Manager. Our goal is to deliver the best local food to our members in a simple, convenient weekly package.

Marketing and Outreach Advocate

  • Time spent in the marketing and outreach side of the business will include developing creative content and photographs, publishing content through our blog, email, and social media channels. There are also opportunities for in-person outreach on campus or at Intervale Food Hub community pick up locations. Our goal is to educate people about our food, grow our community, and encourage people to sign up for our subscriptions.

Cooking Apprentice/Food Blogger

  • This position will focus on preparing food and researching recipes and cooking techniques to make the most of our seasonal fresh ingredients. There are also opportunities for in-person outreach on campus or at Intervale Food Hub community pick up locations. Our goal is to educate people about our food, encourage people to sign up for our subscriptions, and to showcase fun, inspiring meal ideas.

Pick Up Supervisor

  • At UVM and Saint Michael's College, we need a reliable person to supervise the weekly delivery of fresh food to campus, where members pick up.

 

Qualifications

We hope that you bring a passion for local food and a can-do attitude. Applicants should be organized and positive. We look for individuals who can work well independently and have excellent attention to detail.

Compensation

Internships are unpaid. We encourage current students to apply for credit for your internship. Internship hours qualify for City Market Member Worker hours, which will earn you a discount for shopping at City Market. Interns receive a 20% staff discount on local food subscriptions. Interns also have access to complimentary fresh food through our staff program.

 

Deadline

Apply by November 25 for the Spring 2019 Semester. We review each application as it comes in, and are setting up interviews as applications come in to us. We encourage you to apply early!

We are Hiring! Intervale Food Hub Buyer (UPDATED 11/2/18)

Summary of Position:

The Intervale Center seeks a dynamic, mission-driven part-time Food Hub Buyer to join our team in Burlington, Vermont.

For 30 years, the Intervale Center has led a community food revolution that sustains farms, land and people. We have pioneered farm and food innovations like Community Supported Agriculture, commercial composting, riparian restoration, farm business incubation, gleaning and food hub development.

The Intervale Food Hub Buyer will manage the procurement and sourcing strategy, negotiate contracts, purchase products, onboard new suppliers and oversee our relationships with suppliers in support of the Intervale Food Hub, a local foods retail business that sells a range of products directly to individuals and families in the greater Burlington area.

This full-time position (32 hours/week) reports to the Food Hub Director and is an important part of the business’s operations team.

Roles and Responsibilities:

•Manages procurement and sourcing strategy, including contract and negotiation decisions, to improve quality, profitability and vendor relations

  • Negotiates product contracts with growers based on quality parameters

  • Creates custom market/sourcing reports for distribution internally

  • Reports to team about grower fields and monitors progress of upcoming crops and potential shortages/overages

  • Effectively communicates with suppliers to ensure timely deliveries, excellent product quality, continuous improvement and improving lead times

  • Facilitates the development of new suppliers to help them reach the level of excellence required by Food Hub standards

  • Evaluates and selects suppliers based on their ability to supply product in accordance with the IFH’s requirements, such as quality, contract compliance, and accuracy

  • Works with other parts of the Food Hub to determine volume needs or consumer preference

  • Places orders, creates PO's and does all required follow up until product is successfully received

  • Receives and spot-checks the quality of incoming product

  • Works with suppliers on delivery problems, shortages and product returns

  • Develops and maintains good, positive working relationships with suppliers, brokers, agents, sales contacts and/or importers

  • Works with accounting on PO/invoice discrepancies o Creates and maintains crop plan and adjusts as needed after the end of each season, with necessary follow-through on price changes and allowances

  • Acts as the Food Hub expert on matters related to product quality, market trends and the science of perishable inventory management

• Leads the Intervale Center Food Safety Team

  • Maintains IFH Food Safety and Quality Management Plan including HACCP and Food Defense Plan

  • Ensures that all standard operating procedures comply with all current federal, state and local regulations, and meet best practices for safety, efficiency and sustainability. Propose and implement changes as necessary

  • Maintains all licenses and certifications

  • Conducts monthly internal audits and report to the Operations team

  • Acts as liaison to inspectors and 3rd party auditors

  • Leads IFH Product Recall Team in quarterly mock recall exercises

• Works with Food Hub team on strategic planning and overall business development

• Attends Intervale Center staff meetings and special events as necessary

• Contributes to a highly productive, collaborative and clean work environment

• Acts as an ambassador for the entire organization, promote philanthropy, and engage in relationship building in support of Development

• All other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

We are seeking a highly qualified local foods buyer. An ideal candidate will bring:

• Significant, demonstrated experience in product buying and handling required, farming experience preferred

• A minimum of 2 years procurement experience

• Demonstrated knowledge of produce quality standards

• Strong organization, communication and time management skills and attention to detail

• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

• Positive attitude, patience, creativity and a great sense of humor

• Ability to lift 50 pounds

• Valid VT driver’s license with clean driving record
